What is propolis?
It is powerful stuff, seriously powerful... the most antimicrobial substance found on earth!
It is collected by the bees from the sap and resins of plants and transformed by the bees into a sticky substance they use to seal their hive with. This is part of the magic that makes the inside of a beehive the most hygienic place on earth.
Thousands of years ago, ancient civilizations used propolis for its medicinal properties. Greeks used it to treat abscesses. Assyrians put it on wounds and tumors to fight infection and help the healing process. Egyptians used it to embalm mummies.
The composition of propolis can vary depending on the location of the bees and what trees and flowers they have access to. Some mainstream brands buy in propolis from China, so it is best to know a small scale maker that is confident that the bees are foraging in a clean environment.
Researchers have identified more than 300 compounds in propolis. The majority of these compounds are forms of polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that fight disease and damage in the body. It could be used as an antidepressant, assist antibiotics and to help boost your immune system. Studies have shown that propolis has antiviral, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer and anti-inflammation effects.
